Inside the Serbian compound, John Waters was being operated on by a once-prominent surgeon in Belgrade who ran the Serbian POW hospital. Col. Radovan Danich and his assistant, a dentist named Giri Georgevitch, saved Waters’s life and gave him the ability to walk again later with a combination of primitive equipment, expert technique, and attentive care. But it was a horrible time for Waters.

“I had violent hiccups. I would hiccup for an hour or two at a time,” he recalled. “And I had diarrhea. I couldn’t eat. I could not hold anything and if I ate anything it would go right through me. The hospital had some sort of a pain killer which was no pain killer at all. . . . So I just lay there. Dr. Danich kept this wound open so it was draining. That’s all he could do. Keep it open with the table knife and paper bandages and let it drain.” Waters was in no condition to be moved, to be rescued and taken back to American lines, which was what the mission was all about, but at least he was still alive.
